UK students: Disabled Students' Allowance

Disabled Students' Allowance can pay for XRAI for UK students in higher education.

Updated 7 October 2026

Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) is a UK government grant that helps students with a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty with the extra costs of study. It can pay for assistive technology such as XRAI. It isn't means-tested.

What it can pay for

  • XRAI AR2 captioning glasses
  • Specialist assistive technology and software
  • Non-medical helpers, such as a note-taker

Who can apply

Undergraduate and postgraduate students, full- or part-time, on a UK course of at least one year (including distance learning), with a qualifying condition. See the eligibility rules.

How to apply

  1. Apply through your student finance organisation, even if you aren't applying for a loan: Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, SAAS in Scotland, or Student Finance NI.
  2. Send evidence of your condition from a qualified professional.
  3. Attend a needs assessment at an assessment centre, which recommends the support you need.
  4. Your entitlement letter explains how to get the equipment and services approved for you.

Your university's disability team can help throughout. For help getting XRAI through DSA, email hello@xrai.glass.
