Getting started
Which phones and computers does XRAI work on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 17.5 or later, and Android phones and tablets with Android 11 or later. The desktop app for Windows 10 or later and Macs with Apple silicon is part of the Ultimate plan. See Install the XRAI app and sign in and Use XRAI on a Windows PC or Mac.
Is XRAI free?
Yes: the free Essentials plan includes unlimited offline captioning, translation into 20 languages and conversations of up to 30 minutes. Premium and Ultimate add online captioning, 300+ languages, speaker identification and more. See XRAI plans.
Do I need glasses?
No. The app captions on your phone, tablet or computer on its own. Glasses put the captions in your view, so you can watch the person speaking. See Do I need glasses?.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Offline captioning runs on your phone, free, with no connection. Online captioning is more accurate and covers more languages. See Use XRAI offline on iPhone and Android.
Captions and languages
How do I make the captions more accurate?
Get a microphone close to the person speaking, choose the language being spoken, and use a cloud engine when you have a connection. See Getting the most accurate captions and Choose the microphone.
Which languages can XRAI caption and translate?
Premium and Ultimate translate into more than 300 languages and dialects; Essentials into 20. You can choose up to ten spoken languages at once, or Automatic detection on Ultimate. See Choose languages and translate.
Can XRAI translate a conversation between two languages?
Yes. Select both languages and turn on Autoreverse: each person reads the other's words in their own language. See Two-way conversations with Autoreverse.
Can the app read translations aloud?
Yes. Turn on Speak out translated text. See Hear translations spoken aloud.
Can it show who is speaking?
Yes, with speaker identification on Premium and Ultimate. See Speaker identification.
What are Pro minutes?
Online captioning and translation use Pro minutes; on-device captioning is free. Tap the rate at the bottom of the conversation screen to see what you have left. See Pro minutes.
What if the app is running but no captions appear?
Check a conversation is running, the Active audio source on the Audio tab, the microphone permission and the spoken language. See If captions don't appear.
Why did my conversation stop by itself?
Free conversations last up to 30 minutes; the app also asks Are you still there? after a set time and stops if nobody answers; and cloud captioning stops when Pro minutes run out. See If the app closes or won't start captioning.
Where are my saved conversations?
On the conversation screen, newest first. On the free Essentials plan they are kept for one day. See Rename, share and delete conversations.
Glasses
Which glasses work with XRAI?
XRAI AR2, XREAL Air glasses and the XREAL Beam Pro, QONOQ MiRZA, RayNeo X2, and glasses that mirror your phone's screen. See Glasses that work with XRAI.

What if my AR2 won't connect or show captions?
Check the Bluetooth icon at the top of the screen, then follow AR2 problems and fixes, or Glasses connected but no captions. To start afresh, see Reset and re-pair your AR2.
How do I update my AR2?
When an update is waiting, a red dot appears on your picture: tap it, then Update AR2 Firmware. See Update the AR2 firmware from the app.
Plans and billing
How do I cancel, or get a refund?
Plans are sold through the App Store and Google Play, so you cancel and ask for refunds there. Deleting the app doesn't cancel a subscription. See Manage or cancel your subscription.
What if the app doesn't show a plan I bought?
Check that you are signed in with the same account you used when you bought it, then sign out and in again. If it still doesn't show, email support@xrai.glass. See Your profile and account.
Can my employer or university pay for XRAI?
In the UK, Access to Work and the Disabled Students' Allowance can pay for XRAI. See Access to Work and Disabled Students' Allowance.
Can my organisation use XRAI?
Staff can sign in with Microsoft 365, and organisations can run XRAI in their own Azure subscription. See Deploy XRAI into your Azure cloud.
Venues and events
How can my venue offer live captions?
XRAI Stream captions and translates what is said at a venue and sends it to visitors' phones, screens and glasses. See What is XRAI Stream?.
How do I read the captions at a venue?
Scan the venue's QR code or open its link: the captions open in your browser, free, with nothing to install. See Read live captions at a venue.
