Getting the most accurate captions

Simple changes that make XRAI captions more accurate: the microphone, the language, the engine and the room.

Updated 7 October 2026

Get the microphone close

The biggest difference comes from the microphone. Put the phone near the person speaking, use the microphones in XRAI glasses, or use a Bluetooth or clip-on microphone. See Choose the microphone.

Choose the right spoken language

Pick the language being spoken rather than relying on automatic detection when you know it. If captions stay poor, try another variety of the same language: some people get better results from American English than British English, for example.

Use a cloud engine

Cloud engines are the most accurate and need an internet connection. On-device engines work offline and are free, but are less accurate. See AI engines.

Tell the app about the room

In the settings panel's Audio tab, set Level of background noise to Quiet, Moderate or Noisy to match where you are.

Check your connection

Cloud captions need a steady connection. On a weak signal, captions arrive late or stop; on-device captions carry on offline.
